We met at Dennys at Orange Show Road for Breakfast and left at 8AM. Our Broken Jeep owner, David Haines was waiting when we got to Dennys and he rode with Lyle since Lyle's son is stationed at the same base with him. Along on this trip were Andy Lamar in his YJ, Rey and Lora Valdesuso in their YJ, and Billy Sims riding with me.
We went in on 3N-14 from Fawnskin to 3N-11 to 3N17 at the foot of ½ Mile Hill. Then on to Suicide Hill and a left turn put us on this "new" trail. It is a very unused trail with no signs of recent use and no trail sign at the top where we went in. The Jeep was about a mile from the turn off and we went up and down several hills with many "good" err ah tough sections.
Going up one of the good spots the low range in my t-case let go and we suddenly "jetted" backwards down the hill for about 50-ft. before it veered off the side and the brush stopped us from going over the bluff. A real "E" ticket ride. After that I just used hi range.
When we got to his Jeep we found the new drive shaft that had been sent him was for a stock Jeep and not one with a Dana 60 in the rear. I turned around at the top of the hill and had Lyle anchor me at the top. I hooked my front winch line to his and let myself down to the end of mine and then he let me down to the end of his. Then I let out my rear winch line to the end and hooked up to David's Jeep. I winched David up to me and then released the rear winch and winched myself up. Then David again, then me again, then David to get us both up on top. Whew, what a job. David only having front wheel drive I strapped him the rest of the way back to 3N-17 where he was able to drive out on his own. By now it was already after 2PM.
Since I had no low range I went on out with David while the others went on to do 3N-93, Holcomb Creek. All in all a fun day with a good feeling helping a fellow Jeeper who will not be going out again by himself having learned a very valuable lesson.
