Well, it was time to make another run in the sand. My son, Chris, and I got out there around 9:00 pm on Friday night and set up camp around trestle 16. This a little further south than we typically camp but it did make for some interesting navigation. Warren got a late start Friday night and arrived early Saturday morning after a brief nap on the roadside along the way. Billy Sims and his wife, Connie, also arrived early Saturday morning. Warren and Chris were riding quads and Billy and I were driving Jeeps.
I found a web site that offered GPS coordinates for lots of interesting stuff around Glamis so we decided to go check some of them out. I established a waypoint for something called "The Wall" which was around seven miles south of camp and we headed out. We got to within a half mile from The Wall when we started getting into some extremely soft sand that made continued progress pretty difficult. Billy and I decided that two Jeeps without an operational winch between us would be better off in some of the harder packed sand around Oldsmobile and Comp Hills and we headed back to camp. We went to Comp Hill at night and introduced Billy to sand hill climbing at night. It wasn't very crowded when we went there so Comp Hill was very dark and difficult to navigate. This made it pretty interesting. On the way back to camp that night along the Sand Highway, Warren found a nice steep hill to jump on his quad. The only problem with it was this hill lead up to Highway 78. He discovered this when he crested the hill and landed on the pavement.
On Sunday, we went out to Oldsmobile Hill and took turns climbing in the sand. On what turned out to be the last run up the hill for me, a guy on a quad rode up to me and asked for help getting his wife down the hill. She broke her leg jumping her quad on the backside of Oldsmobile. Connie Sims splinted the lady's leg and I hauled her down the hill to her husband truck for the trip to the hospital. By the time all of this was done, it was time to pack up and head home.
We'll have to make another attempt to find The Wall, China Wall, and the airplane crash on our next trip.
