The weekend
of 14th-16th of December, a few of us decided to go Anza
Borrego in the Southern California desert. We went for two
reasons. 1) 4-Wheeling, (duh!), and 2) to watch a
reportedly meteor shower on the Friday night.
I got there about 9:00pm Friday night after taking the day
off to go Xmas shopping. Fortunately i raised Roger on the
CB as i was getting close to the place where Dale had said
the campsite was. It was WAY further in than i would have
expected. But with Roger leading, we got there no problem.
Already there were Dale, Andy and Jim (from CORVA), with
their families.
The meteors were spectacular, coming every few minutes and
shooting brightly across the night sky. Worth the trip.
The following morning we headed out to play on El Diablo
hill, A steep dune which is sometimes very difficult to
climb. Unfortunately (or fortunately) we missed the turn
off and ended up at Sandstone canyon. It was decided to
explore, so we drove down here instead. The canyon, as the
name suggests, has been carved from the surrounding
sandstone by water runoff and wind, leaving deep crevasses
we can drive down.

Easy trail,
leaving plenty of time to examine the curious shapes the
erosion has carved into the walls of the canyon. The only
excitement was Roger taking an interesting line up a ledge
and getting a little tippy.

At the end
of the canyon are some mud palisades. Deep crevasses in
the walls of the canyon that can be climbed to the top of
the walls. Dale and Roger went exploring while we took a
break.

When we
came out we found the entrance to El Diablo hill and
played there for a while. Very easy.

Back to
camp for lunch, then off to play in the BLM area by
Highway 78. Had the motor-cross bikes wondering what the
hell we were doing!

Saturday
evening was spend around a roaring camp fire drinking Pina
Colada's and general BS'ing!
Good run, no breakage, and everyone had a good time.
