Return to Run Report List
Steve
and Shirley drove up Friday afternoon and got checked into the
Leapin Lizard RV Ranch (http://www.leapinlizardrvranch.com).
We
(Chrishanne, Zander, Elizabeth, and I) arrived at 12:15am and Steve
was still up. We quietly unloaded the Cruiser and the trailer then
pulled into our campsite. I hooked up the electricity and left
everything else till morning.
Saturday morning we all went to Fish Creek and Sandstone Canyon.
about 1.5 miles in we found a side canyon that I've never noticed
before and tried that route. About 1/4 mile in there was a large
sandstone boulder (about 3.5 feet high) blocking the trail. We
could have broken it down and kept going but didn't have the right
tools so we turned back to the main canyon.
We were able to go about 4 miles up before the trail was blocked.
With a couple more vehicles we would have tried to go farther but
decided to turn back. We got back to camp about 3:45 and relaxed
before dinner.
Sunday morning Steve, Zander, and I went out looking for the Pumpkin
Patch and the Slot. We took a fun trail and got to the Pumpkin
Patch in about 2 hours with a couple of breaks to let Zander dig in
the dirt. The Pumpkin Patch is a field of sandstone boulders that
are about the size and shape of pumpkins.
We then went off in search of the Slot. Since nobody had come out
for the Sunday run, we decided to head back to camp for lunch and to
pack up to go home. We left about 1:30 and headed home.
The weather was warm. A bit too much in the sun but perfect in the
shade. Perfect tent camping weather!
The campground had water, sewer, and electric hookups for $21 per
night. The campground showers were in exelent condition and kept
spotless. They have very strict noise abatement rules regarding
OHVs. The do not allow any motorcycles or non-street legal vehicles
to be operated in the park but do have a parking area for them right
next to a gate. They must be pushed in and out. Street legal
trucks can be driven in and out and parked at your campsite. They
also want truck/RV idle time kept to a minimum and speed below 5
MPH. The end result is that the campground is very quite and safe
for kids to play.
They also have rental trailers (with sheets and towels included) for
a reasonable price.
My new pickup was fantastic. I set the cruise and it never slowed
down more than 2mph. Even then it picked back up on it's own.
The
heavier stock suspension handled the camper much better than the old
truck did even with the added air bags. Even high winds in Palm
Springs didn't give me any problems. Needless to say Chrishanne and
Zander were much more comfortable with the crew cab.
