Last Chance Canyon "Pre-run" 9/28/02

Return to Run Report List

This was "supposed" to be a "Pre-run" prior to the real club run in October. Well, after I asked for assistance from people who had been there, it just kind of snowballed! There were approximately 18 vehicles on this "pre-run"!! We were joined by several members of the Ridgecrest Tin Benders, who volunteered to act as guides, and several others from various off-road forums. Thanks to Krusty, Rob, and Jerry for their time in showing us their "backyard".

Last Chance Canyon is about 27 miles the other side of Mojave off Highway 14. Another old mining area similar to Calico, and well worth the drive up there.

The area includes villages, temporary camps, rock art sites, milling stations, quarries, cremations, and rock shelters. The area also contains numerous historic sites. The canyon is completely drivable in high range 2 wheel drive, however there are some challenging side routes for those who choose to try them. Something for everyone.

Breakage was: 2 tire sidewalls (Eric's and mine), and a snapped Birfield. There were also a few dents, and a loose master brake cylinder. Not bad for that many rigs in one place.

Tonie Seger and the Burro Schmidt Tunnel

Tonie Segar  lived near Last Chance Canyon since 1963, in a little house outside the Burro Schmidt Tunnel. She sold maps of last Chance Canyon and the surrounding area, for a couple of bucks each, which make really good trail maps. However although i bought one, I'm not going to scan it in and post it, as i feel that would be ripping her off. Here is a much better article about them than i could write, so jump over here if you wish. BTW, the picture is from that site too.
