Rowher/Lookout Trails - March 20, 2004

Return to Run Report List

Well we had another great run on Saturday to Rowher Flats. Six of us met at the donut shop here in Westminster and convoyed up to the Sand Canyon exit of the 14 fwy. There we met up with Keith and Roger from the Rubicon club. We gassed up and took off to the trailhead near Bouquet reservoir. We aired down and I led the way up the first (and largest) hill. As luck would have it I almost flipped over backward on the first obstacle, which I’m sure, instilled great confidence in the rest of the group. Anyway, I pulled through and the next victim Chris also had a tough time getting through the same area. After seeing my mistakes the rest of the group had seemed to have no trouble getting through. We continued on up to the top of the mountain looking for the start of Lookout Trail taking in the scenery on the way. The view was wonderful from the top. We found the trail and took it down some very steep and rutted hills. At the bottom we stopped for lunch and talked to Jerry the local forest ranger. We then continued on back toward the reservoir on Rowher Trail. It had some nice hills and obstacles for us to climb. At the very end when we had to go back down the 1st hill (the one which gave me earlier) I said to Jim my passenger that if I had not come up this trail in the morning, there would be no way I would go down it since it looked too steep and rutted. In fact, as we came down we had a small crowd of people filming us (I think they thought we were nuts for taking jeeps on this trail).
