Fish Creek/Sandstone Canyon run

Return to Run Report List

Chrishanne, Zander, David (Chrishanne’s father) and I left home around 9:30pm Friday night.  Since I didn’t know exactly where I would be camping and was driving my father’s motorhome, we stopped in Truck Haven for the night.  We woke up about 7:00am and drove down to the Fish Creek campground.  We had breakfast and setup camp then got the Cruiser ready to go.  Chris and Sharon showed up just as we were getting ready to hit the trail.

About 5 minutes into Fish Creek, we stopped look at some of the sandstone canyon wall formations and to let Zander walk into a little cave.  We then continued up Fish Creek wash for about 45 minutes until we arrived at the beginning of Sandstone Canyon.

About 15 minutes in, we stopped for lunch where we could sit underneath the canyon wall.  After lunch, we continued up the canyon.  The trail was mostly just a sand wash, but with some beautiful wall formations and narrow passages.

There were a few spots that provided a little challenge to Chris’ stock Amigo, but he got through them all without a strap.  There were also a few optional routes that were fun for me.  This obstacle had an easy go around.

We went on until a bit after 3:30 and the trail was getting progressively rougher.  We decided that it was time to turn back.  When we came back to the obstacle shown above, there was a set of tire tracks (presumable a Samurai) running right in between the rocks.

Of course getting out took less time than getting in and we were back at camp well before dark.  Chris and Sharon packed up and headed for home.

Sunday morning, Dave, Chrishanne, Zander, and I drove back up Fish Creek for about 10 minutes to the beginning of the hiking trail leading to the Wind Caves.  We hiked the 1 mile up hill and went exploring.  The caves are pretty cool especially when you think that they were formed by blowning wind.

On the way out, I stopped to pose for a picture.

The weather was great and the scenery beautiful.  I couldn’t have asked for a better weekend.

Happy Trails,

Warren “Crash” Sternin
