Truckhaven Turkey Trot, November 28th through November 30th 2003

Return to Run Report List

Our Thanksgiving run this year was great. Warren, Chrishanne, and Zander Sternin, Steve Bass, And Frank and Sue Hayes drove out to Cabazon where we met Cal Gordon Friday morning. From there we drove on out Truckhaven where we met up with the San Diego 4-Wheelers and we set up camp. About 2PM we went out on a run and got back a little after dark. Steve built a nice camp fire where we all sat around and told tall stories. The next morning Jack Coy arrived with Clayton and Ryan Miller getting there about 8AM. After breakfast we went out on a run with 23 vehicles. It was a great time with hard and easy stuff with bypasses for the hard things. We came to a soft climb and Mike Kunz who was leading said anyone who wanted to could try their luck but he would go around since he had already climbed it the day before. Since I was behind him I had to try my luck. I made it almost to the top before I started spinning where I dropped it from second to first gear and slowly crawled to the top. Next came Cal who couldn't quit make it over the top. I hooked a strap to the Sami and a couple of us pulled him over the top by hand. Clayton was next and watching us he aired down to 8 PSI while Cal was trying to get up. He took a lot of runs at it but I finally had to winch him to the top. As soon as he cleared the top Gail from San Diego in a Wrangler drove right up and over the top. We got back to camp about 3 PM to have time to get prepared for dinner. There was 20 feet of tables heaped with food and another table just for deserts. We had Barbeque turkey, deep fried turkey, convection cooked in a trash can turkey with mashed potatoes, gravy, sweet potatoes, many kinds of salads, and many other assorted side dishes and kinds of deserts. 83 people were fed at the dinner and there was plenty left over. It's a shame we can't get more people from our club to come out to these events since it was a great family gathering with lots of children and fit for stock to highly modified rigs from Sami' to full size. Saturday after dinner 4 of us went on a night run to the Calcite Mine. Since only 4 of us showed up and none of us cared about going to the mine we went out and did the stuff that was to hairy for the day group. Adie if mike had been there we would have gone to the mine. We got back to camp about 10 and sat around Steve's campfire till about 11 o'clock and went to bed. Sunday morning we drove home. The was a great run and being with the San Diego group was a blast. They have already said they want us to come back and join them next year so start making plans to go.
